Reviews
Sunflower is one of Austins most authentic Vietnamese Resturant. Their menu has so much to choose from and I wanted to eat it all. everything I ordered has been so good. The Banh Xeo pancake is so crispy, I also got Banh Hoi the shrimp and sugar cane wrap and Nem nuong wrap and that was delicious too. The beef Goi Was just ok though. My daughter loved the Bo Ne hot plate but wished they added pate with it too. Not picture here but the canh chua (fish sour soup) was great too. My other daughter had the pho and that was ok too.
I will definitely be going back to get my Vietnamese fix here forsure.
Nut allergy friendly on their soups I've had.
Review is for to-go pickup via GrubHub. I arrived about 25 minutes after ordering and my soups were ready and still hot when I returned home. I still like to boil soups when I get home to ensure the uncooked meats cook all the way through.
We had the Pho Bo and the Hu Tieu. I love Hu Tieu and theirs is very flavorful with a good amount of ingredients, though I would've liked more pork and shrimp (4.5/5). The Pho Bo was a bit oily but had a rich flavor, definitely one of the better I've had in Austin (4/5).
Overall a 5/5 for speed of service and quality for a to-go dish. I will say that I think their banh xeo (mung bean crepe) is pretty overpriced but I won't let that affect my rating until I try it.
The Banh Xeo was thick and crispy and quite big.
Spring Roll was good and fresh with a nice thin layer of rice paper.
Chicken wing was on the sweet side for me, not my taste personally but kids loved it.
The service is fast here! Food came quickly and paid at the cash register when leaving which was convenient.
Food- Good quality and flavors
Staff- friendly and attentive
Atmosphere- cozy with home like charm
Will I return- many times, yes!
Recommendation-
Coconut Cury with chicken and Vietnemese coffee
First things first, the portion are massive. The prices fooled me because I wasn’t confident about paying $18 for a stir fry at a non central restaurant but I was surprised at the dish size. Couldn’t finish my food but it was really good. Sort of different from usual viet food, which I liked. Drinks were great, food came out fast, lots of parking and tables. Nothing to complain about.
(Note: We were told this new Sunflower Restaurant is run by the daughter of the original Sunflower’s; and indeed it has the same menu and same awesome crepes!)The food is authentic Vietnamese and is consistently good and fresh. They have the best Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Crepes) anywhere inside and outside of Vietnam, Canh Chua (Sweet & Sour Soup), Goi Ga (Chicken Salad), etc. The food is always fresh and tasty.
The Banh Xeo is truly heaven, with chunks of plumb, juicy large shrimps and white meat, rich mung bean spread, and generous amount of bean sprouts. The crepe’s crust is crunchy and never greasy. The condiments are generous with fresh green leaf lettuce, slides of cucumber, strips of carrots and daikon, and fresh mints leaves. The dipping fish sauce is savory (make sure to mix a dab of chili garlic sauce into the fish sauce first).
Other dishes are equally fresh and tasty. Try the Canh Chua (Sweet & Sour Soup) with Catfish and you will be heavenly rewarded with an especially aromatic yet light and refreshing soup composing of tangy pineapple and tomatoes, crunchy bean sprouts and elephant ear stems, aromatic rice paddy herb, and chunks of white, tender catfish in a sweet and tangy broth. Or try the lunch specials such as lemongrass chicken which includes a generous portion of chicken salad, satee’ green beans, a spring roll or egg roll, and a small bowl of the light version of Sweet & Sour Soup (without proteins and elephant ear stems).
Service was sweet and the environment was nice. However, the food was not worth the price. For 1 app and 3 dishes it was $120 without tip. The food was not the greatest and lacked flavor. The crepe was tasty but it only had a couple pieces of shrimp and barely any chicken. Most likely won't return but the staff was great!
An amazing authentic and gourmet tasting Vietnamese restaurant. Each dish is beautifully prepared and tastes amazing, worth the higher price than what you’d expect at typical Vietnamese places. They have lots of seating and the food comes out pretty quickly. The best dishes are definitely the Shaken Beef, the Shrimp Noodle, and the appetizer Banh Xèo, but you can’t go wrong with any choice, and they have a lot to choose from. I also really enjoyed the Vietnamese Coffee. Overall a great spot, one I’ll definitely come back to.
